It is widely expected that at sufficiently high temperatures order is always lost, e.g., magnets lose their ferromagnetic properties. We pose the question of whether this is always the case in the context of quantum field theory in d space dimensions. More concretely, one can ask whether there exist critical points (CFTs) which break some global symmetry at arbitrary finite temperature. The most familiar CFTs do not exhibit symmetry breaking at finite temperature, and moreover, in the context of the AdS=CFT correspondence, critical points at finite temperature are described by an uncharged black brane which obeys a no-hair theorem. Yet, we show that there exist CFTs which have some of their internal symmetries broken at arbitrary finite temperature. Our main example is a vector model which we study both in the epsilon expansion and arbitrary rank as well as the large rank limit (and arbitrary dimension). The large rank limit of the vector model displays a conformal manifold, a moduli space of vacua, and a deformed moduli space of vacua at finite temperature. The appropriate Nambu-Goldstone bosons including the dilatonlike particle are identified. Using these tools we establish symmetry breaking at finite temperature for finite small ϵ. We also prove that a large class of other fixed points, which describe some of the most common quantum magnets, indeed behave as expected and do not break any global symmetry at finite temperature. We discuss some of the consequences of finite temperature symmetry breaking for the spectrum of local operators. Finally, we propose a class of fixed points which appear to be possible candidates for finite temperature symmetry breaking in d ¼ 2.

Electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) offers a compelling narrative for the generation of the baryon asymmetry, however it cannot be realised in the Standard Model, and leads to severe experimental tensions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). One of the reasons for these experimental tensions is that in traditional approaches to EWBG new physics is required to enter at the electroweak phase transition, which conventionally is fixed near 100 GeV. Here we demonstrate that the addition of sub-TeV fields in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model permits TeV-scale strongly first-order electroweak phase transition. While earlier literature suggested no-go arguments with regards to high-temperature symmetry breaking in supersymmetric models, we show these can be evaded by employing a systematic suppression of certain thermal corrections in theories with a large number of states. The models presented push the new physics needed for EWBG to higher scales, hence presenting new parameter regions in which to realize EWBG and evade experimental tensions, however they are not expected to render EWBG completely outside of the foreseeable future experimental reach.

We study the 2d chiral Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature T and chemical potential μ. The analysis is performed by relating the theory to a SU(N) × U(1) Wess-Zumino-Witten model with appropriate levels and global identifications necessary to keep track of the fermion spin structures. At μ = 0 we show that a certain ℤ2-valued ’t Hooft anomaly forbids the system to be trivially gapped when fermions are periodic along the thermal circle for any N and any T > 0. We also study the two-point function of a certain composite fermion operator which allows us to determine the remnants for T > 0 of the inhomogeneous chiral phase configuration found at T = 0 for any N and any μ. The inhomogeneous configuration decays exponentially at large distances for anti-periodic fermions while it persists for T > 0 and any μ for periodic fermions, as expected from anomaly considerations. A large N analysis confirms the above findings.
