SWOT analysis of wastewater heat recovery systems application

Abstract: Limited availability of fossil fuels and various issues connected with environment conservation lead to a growing interest in unconventional sources of energy. The latter include wastewater carried via sewage systems. Yet, the possibility to extract thermal energy from this source depends on a number of factors, location of heat recovery system being one of them. Viability of utilizing raw wastewater and effluent discharged to a receiving body after treatment process, as potential sources of energy, was assess… Show more

“…However, when it comes to the level of sewage and WWTPs, the number of stakeholders increases. At the same time, there are stringent legal requirements both in terms of the minimum allowable temperature after the harnessing and the physical characteristics of the sludge [41]. This is because, it is impossible to treat sewage water below a certain temperature, usually 10 • C [12], as the nitrification process, is severely affected [37].…”

“…However, in both arrangements the efficiency is reduced considerably, as deposits and sediments tend to settle on the surface. Pumping and filtering this sewage water to an out-line HE can be a solution, but this increases the investment costs and is not practical without major infrastructure refurbishments [41].…”

“…In order to improve its operation, for many years they have been equipped with various types of detention tanks [3,4]. However, it should be remembered that the choice of the appropriate project option should be supported by the analysis of many indicators [5,6], including in particular a technical and financial [7][8][9], and environmental [10,11] analysis, taking into account the lifespan of the investment [12][13][14].…”
