Switchable Split-Ring Frequency Selective Surfaces

Abstract: Abstract-Tunable frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) based on split ring resonators (SRRs) are presented. Tuning performance is achieved by means of several on/off switches placed between the rings of each SRR element. The band-stop FSS response is dynamically tuned to different frequency bands at different switching states. In addition, loadings placed at the corners of outer ring elements, forming a fan-like shape, with additional switches are shown to offer rather fine-tuning capability. A dual-layer FSS is… Show more

“…These form the general design rules for frequency selective ring resonators. 5,9 However, unlike coplanar concentric rings or square loops where the element to element spacing is uniform, the gap width s associated with the proposed coplanar rings changes constantly with the changing ring curvature. Furthermore, in order to avoid the scattering of energy in undesirable directions the spacing of the repeating element has to be less than the shortest wavelength for the broadside incident angle (0 o incident angle) in the considered operating band.…”

“…The transmission and reflection characteristics of FSS can be dynamically tuned using a tuning circuit. 5 applied to a varactor diode. 4 These methods increase the size, cost and complexity of the design and require a large number of active elements.…”

“…Of these geometries, ring based designs have shown excellent performance in supporting various types of polarizations and have demonstrated a good insensibility with respect to the angle of incidence [35]. Various FSS and RFSS based on rings have been proposed, including shorted ring slots, loaded ring slots, active rings, split rings, and trapped rings [36][37][38][39]. Furthermore, ring slot FSSs have demonstrated low insertion loss and low cross-polarization levels [40].…”

“…One trend is to implement a tuning circuit as part of the FSS pattern so that the frequency properties can be varied [6]. High frequency PIN diodes are commonly used to switch on or off sections of the pattern, thus making the surface inductive or capacitive.…”
