Swept-source optical coherence tomography imaging of macular retinal and choroidal structures in healthy eyes

Abstract: BackgroundTo report the thickness of the retina, retinal ganglion cell (RGC)-related layers, and choroid in healthy subjects using swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).MethodsOne hundred and forty-six healthy volunteers were consecutively recruited for this prospective observational study. Thickness of retina, RGC-related layers, and choroid in the standard early treatment of diabetic retinopathy study (ETDRS) grid were automatically measured using one SS-OCT (DRI OCT-1, Topcon, Japan). The IOL M… Show more

“…Other parameters that did not meet this statistical criterion but with known clinical relevance for choroidal vasculature (such as spherical equivalent) were also considered. [32][33][34][35] A backward (step-down) elimination procedure was then used to achieve the multivariate models presented.…”

“…Based on this understanding, the aforementioned changes can be detected early by imaging the macula using an Ocular Coherence Tomography that facilitates both thicknesses and morphology detection before these changes are clinically apparent. In effect, early detection may favorably affect the visual outcome [7]. In the clinic, Fourier-domain OCT is used in standard commercial systems and offers superior sensitivity compared to the conventional time-domain approach [7,8].…”

“…More recently, using different light sources with longer wavelengths (1,060 nm vs. 800 nm), swept-source OCT provides an alternative to the EDI spectral-domain acquisition system [3] .…”
