Swelling and drug release behavior of calcium alginate/poly (sodium acrylate) hydrogel beads

Abstract: In the present work calcium alginate/poly (sodium acrylate) composite beads have been prepared by in situ formation of cross-linked poly (sodium acrylate) network, within the calcium alginate (CA) beads. The CA/poly (SA) beads have been found to be stable for more than 48 h, in the physiological fluid (PF) of pH 7.4, while the plain alginate beads disintegrated within a couple of hours. The water uptake of beads was investigated under various composition parameters such as the amount of alginate, concentration… Show more

“…When compared the swelling %values in PB pH 6.8 and HCl pH 1.2 mediums, much more swelling of the beads at PB pH 6.8 was observed (p<0.05). Similar results were reported by previous studies [12,21,22]. The pH of the medium affects the swelling behaviours of AL beads.…”

“…It undergoes ionic gelatin in the presence of divalent cations such as CaCl2 in an aqueous medium. AL beads prepared using CaCl2 have been widely used for drug delivery applications, because, AL alginates is a natural, biocompatible, polyanionic, non-toxic copolymer [11,12,13].…”

“…The 2% SA with 5% and 10% drug exhibited a swelling ratio of 120 AE 1.25% and 180 AE 1.29% respectively. In the studies of Bajpai and Kirar [46], where CA/poly (SA) beads were formed using calcium ALG/poly (sodium acrylate), swelling behavior of the beads was observed. The beads exhibited a maximum swelling value of 273% in 1 h and the swelling ratio decreased gradually up to 174% that extended over a total duration of 18 h. Therefore, it is a notable observation that SA hydrogel obtained from natural sources had a higher swelling index in comparison with the commercially purchased SA as reported in their paper.…”
