The present study analyses the trend and variability in wave parameters (wave height and wave period) and wave power (WP) in the North Indian Ocean (NIO). The impact of climatic modes such as El‐Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) on the WP of NIO has been investigated using the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis datasets (ERA5) for the period 1959–2021. It is observed that along the west coast of India (WCI), the coastal WP increased from south to north during summer whereas, in winter and other seasons the WP increased from north to south. Instead, along the east coast of India (ECI), WP is higher on the north than the south, always. The annual WP climatology along the Indian coasts reveals that WP potential is higher along/adjacent to WCI than the ECI. It was observed that the total significant wave height (SWH) WP anomalies during normal and positive IOD (pIOD) events are mainly dominated by swell WP, whereas during El Niño and combined ENSO‐IOD events, dominated by wind seas. During the peak of pure El‐Niño, the SWH WP shows a basin‐wide increase in WP anomalies. However, during summer, SWH WP showed increasing trends over Bay of Bengal. It is evident from the composite analysis that annual averaged WP anomalies are decreasing in normal, pure pIOD and combined events, but El‐Niño is found to increase the WP anomalies over the Arabian Sea in the region north of 20°N. The present study advocates that a detailed analysis of WP along the Indian coastal regions is beneficial to the renewable energy industries to utilize this as an important energy resource.

Long-term trends of wind speed (WS) and significant wave height (SWH) in the Arabian Sea (AS) and Bay of Bengal (BoB) are of great interest to scientists, engineers, climate modelers, and policymakers. It is associated with global climate change and efficient offshore and near-shore socio-economic activity management. In this study, the climatology and variability of mean and extreme SWH and WS is determined during the monsoon (JJA) and post-monsoon (SON) seasons along the Indian coastline during 1979--2021 using ERA5 reanalysis datasets. The generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution is utilized to determine the extreme values of SWH and WS. Further, linear trend analysis is also carried out at six key port locations (Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Mumbai, Mangalore, and Kochi) along the Indian coastline. The outcome reveals that mean SWH displays an increasing trend (Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Mumbai, Mangalore, and Kochi) during JJA and SON seasons while mean WS shows a decreasing trend in JJA season and an increasing trend in SON season. The maximum rate of increase in extreme SWH is observed at Kochi (r=0.78 cm yr-1) and Paradip port (1.32 cm yr-1) during JJA and SON seasons, respectively. In SON season, extreme WS exhibits an increasing trend at all six locations, and the rate of increase is maximum at Visakhapatnam (3.46 cm s-1 yr-1), followed by Paradip (3.39 cm s-1 yr-1) and minimum at Mumbai (1.84 cm s-1 yr-1). Kochi and Paradip ports experienced a significant increase in extreme SWH and WS during JJA and SON seasons, respectively.

Assessment of reliable wave climate at jetty on open coasts: role of 2D spatio-temporal spectrum

The development of coastal roads and bridges is important to overcome traffic congestion in densely populated coastal cities like Mumbai. In the present study, the importance of assessment of wave conditions required for the extension of jetties to facilitate the transportation of bridge components to build the sea link bridge during non-monsoon season is envisaged so that zero downtime for operability at jetties is ascertained. Coupled hydrodynamic spectral wave model (Telemac-2D and TOMAWAC) used to hindcast waves reveals that the application of spatio-temporal varying 2D directional spectrum (from ERA-5) over the offshore boundary as a forcing function helps in propagation of realistic wave climate of Mahim Bay, Mumbai. Coupling of the TOMAWAC-ARTEMIS model is essential to obtain reliable wave conditions near the jetties (nearshore) for predominant directions. The study reveals that under existing conditions, downtime at proposed jetties will be for 30 days wherein Hs ≥ 0.3 m. As such to achieve zero downtime, the existing bund on the seaward side of jetties was extended optimally (70 m) so that smooth operability for the entire non-monsoon is achieved. Thus, application of spatio-temporal varying 2D spectrum in optimising the length of the guide bund has been found promising for speedy transportation of proposed bridge components. The study also reveals that there is an insignificant climatological impact on wave conditions.
