Background Hardsetting soils are considered problem soils due to its behavior of becoming hard and unbearable to cultivate not until rewetted. Few investigations were conducted in this kind of problem soil; hence, information about biomass yield and nutrient uptake is still elusive. This study investigated the impact of potentially hardsetting soil on the biomass yield and nutrient uptake of sweet corn under no-tillage cultivation system with varying fertilization treatments. Results The application of full NPK + 1 Mg ha−1 VC increased stover and grain yield by 26–106% and 11–135%, respectively. Approximately 64% and 112% of sweet corn stover and grain yield increased when treated with full NPK. Highly significant quadratic relationship (P < 0.001) was revealed between total biomass yield and nutrient uptake of sweet corn, implying that 98–99% of the variation in total biomass could be elucidated by its nutrient uptake. Further, this indicated the suitability of nutrient uptake function that could be used as an estimate in the progression of total biomass accumulation. The application of full NPK showed statistically significant (P < 0.001) nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiency across treatments. The soil in the experimental area was a potentially hardsetting soil due to its rapid soil strength development at least 4 days from wetting. This implies that with continued use, proper soil management must be implemented like reduced tillage and organic matter application to facilitate structure formation and binding of soil particles by labile fraction in organic matter. Conclusion Application of organic amendment in combination with inorganic fertilizer could be a sustainable production strategy on sweet corn production system in potentially hardsetting soil under no tillage through enhanced nutrient uptake and biomass accumulation.

Contamination of heavy metals on the soil leads to an increase in its acidity. Vermicompost application is commonly used to improve the properties of soil. The study was carried out to determine the reduction of the acidity in Pb and Cd contaminated soils under the application of vermicompost. Two laboratory experiments were set using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors. The first factor was soil samples, vis Inceptisols, and Entisols, and the second factor was the rates of vermicompost, consisted of 0, 5, 10, 15 g kg-1. The treatment combination was repeated three times. The soils were pretreated with 10 mg kg-1 Pb or Cd using Pb(NO3)2 and Cd(NO3)2. Three hundred kg soil sample was incorporated with vermicompost and placed in a 500 ml plastic bottle. The mixtures were incubated for eight weeks, and the moisture of the soil was maintained at field capacity. The acidity and soil temperature were monitored every week. The study indicated that Pb contaminated soil acidity increased to the sixth week of the incubation and decreased afterward. However, the acidity of Cd contaminated soil was consistently increased during the incubation. Treatment of vermicompost significantly lowered the acidity of both Pb and Cd contaminated soils. Contaminated Entisols had a higher response to the application of vermicompost than that of Inceptisols. This finding is significant in assessing acidity risk and possible management intervention for Pb and Cd contaminated soils.

Liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) supplementation for solid organic fertilizer can accelerate the availability of plant nutrients. However, the nutrient content of LOF is highly dependent on its sources. The objective of the experiment was to examine the nutrient content of enriched liquid organic fertilizer from dairy cattle wastes. The experiment was conducted at Closed Agriculture Production System Research Station located in Air Duku Village, Bengkulu, Indonesia, at 1054 m above sea level. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design with ten treatments and three replications. The treatments consisted of LOF from dairy cattle wastes enriched with Tithonia diversifolia, Ageratum conyzoides, Leucaena leucocephala, and Gliricidia sepium, their combination with phosphate rock, the combination of Tithonia diversifolia, and Ageratum conyzoides, and control. The LOF solution was anaerobically incubated for six weeks. The experiment indicated that during the incubation, solution pH declined for the first two weeks, gradually increased up to week 6. At the end of incubation, control exhibited the highest pH as compared to those with enrichment, indicating that decomposition of green biomass released a considerable amount of hydrogen. Enrichment of LOF considerably increased the contents of C, N, P, K, Ca, and Mg. The addition of phosphate rock to biomasses did not contribute a prominent increase in phosphorus content, possibly due to its low solubility at high pH. LOF enrichment with Tithonia diversifolia and Ageratum conyzoides had the highest N, P, and Mg contents. Therefore, the enrichment is the most potential for LOF production in closed agriculture system.
