“…However, in pruning the lower portion of branches that bear relatively smaller fruit (Davidson & George, 1959) is typically removed. It has been found, that younger branches bear fruit of higher quality (San Martino, Hochmaier, & Manavella, 2014) and shoots up to 20 cm in length produce larger number of flower and leaf buds (Thurzó et al, 2008). Thus, specific pruning approaches and training systems need to be developed to maximize harvest without compromising stem growth in plantations where wood production is the main goal.…”

“…'Schneider' resulted as a good cultivar to pollinate orchards with 'Kordia' and 'Regina' since it overlaps well with 'Regina' ( Figure 5). It has to be considered that 'Regina' needs a donor which is already open to cover its flowering period, since the earlier flowers have better quality (San Martino et al, 2014). Also it has to be taken into account that the higher the overlapping the higher fruit set; it is mentioned that the synchrony of bloom should cover at least 70% of the blooming period (Nyeḱi, 1989, cited by Nyeḱi et al, 2003.…”

“…Applied studies concerning more practical aspects of productivity formation in relation to wood age, have also been conducted. Wood age is reported to affect spur, bud and flower density (Edin et al 1996;Kondratenko et al 2021), fruit diameter, and soluble solids content (San Martino et al 2014). In addition, these parameters are strongly influenced by the segment within a branch section of each age (Schaumberg and Gruppe 1985;Maguylo et al 2004;Stanley 2016).…”
