Swedish Enlistment Battery (SEB): Construct Validity and Latent Variable Estimation of Cognitive Abilities by the CAT‐SEB

Abstract: Modern computer technology permits efficient evaluation of test scores in terms of basic orthogonal factors of ability. A three-level hierarchical model of cognitive abilities was used as the theoretical basis of the computerized Swedish Enlistment Battery (CAT-SEB). Structural analysis of ten ability tests on a sample of 1,436 conscripts by confirmatory factor analysis (tested by the LISREL system) revealed a general, a verbal and a spatial factor ± although the determinacy of the latter was weak. A nested fa… Show more

“…The purpose of the enlistment procedure is to assign the conscript to an appropriate duty position. The classification of conscripts to different positions is done according to requirement profiles concerning cognitive, personality, medical and physiological variables (Mårdberg & Carlstedt 1998). The IQ measure we use is a measure of general cognitive ability reported in stanine units (stanine is a contraction of standard and nine and it is a method of scaling test scores on a nine-point standard scale with a mean of five and a standard deviation of two).…”

“…Those who enlisted between 1980 and 1993 also performed four subtests, but concept discrimination was replaced by a synonym test, and paper form board by metal folding (Carlstedt 2000). Finally, those who enlisted in 1994 or later performed ten subtests with inductive reasoning, spatial, verbal and technical comprehension parts (Mårdberg & Carlstedt 1998).…”

“…One way to do that is to split each test into half-tests, which are both entered into the CFA model. Mårdberg & Carlstedt (1998) fitted such a model to a battery of tests measuring verbal, spatial and reasoning abilities. The results showed the unique components of variance to be substantially larger for the spatial and reasoning tests than for the verbal tests.…”

“…We used a retrospective analysis of the Swedish Enlistment Battery (SEB), which measures the general intelligence factor. In Sweden it is legally required that every able man is evaluated for compulsory military service, and during this time the conscripts have various tests, including the SEB [16], with the purpose of classifying them for different military positions based on their results [17]. The SEB is based on the general intelligence factor approaches, but is also guided by theoretical and methodological development with it roots in Scandinavia [1].…”
