Sweat gland differentiation in mammary adenoid cystic carcinoma

Abstract: A breast tumor is described which presented as an exophytic mass, and which by both light and electron microscopic examination had a biphasic histologic composition. In the superficial area adjacent to the epidermis, it showed tubular differentiation similar to a cutaneous tubular apocrine adenoma and salivary basal cell adenoma, and, in the deeper portion, it had the characteristic features of adenoid cystic carcinoma. Their possible interrelationships are discussed, and mammary adenoid cystic carcinoma is br… Show more

“…Crumpler et al (1976) emphasized the resemblance of monomorphic adenomas to basaloid sweat-gland tumours. A biphasic pattern with close similarities to dermal apocrine adenomas and to salivary basal cell adenomas in certain adenoid cystic carcinomas of the breast has also been reported (Prioleau et al, 1979). The histomorphologic relationship of the chondroid syringoma of skin to mixed tumours of salivary glands (Varela-Duran et al, 1979) further extends the comparisons.…”

“…Adenoid cystic carcinoma occurs rarely in the breast; it occurs morc frequently in the major and mi norsalivary glands and in mucous and mucoserous glands of other sites, giving rise to tumours in the lacrimal gland , external auditory canal, oesophagus , cervix uteri , prostate , Bartholin's gland and skin(I, 2,5,6,7,8).…”

“…In ACC of the breast foci of DCIS and of squamous differentiation can be present [30], as can sebaceous differentiation [38,57]. Invasion of nerves, mitoses and necrosis are occasionally encountered.…”
