SWASH: An operational public domain code for simulating wave fields and rapidly varied flows in coastal waters

This study presents an intercomparison of a SWAN and SWASH wave model and 3D laboratory experiments for an existing navigation channel towards a harbor. Results show that the spectral refraction model SWAN underestimates the wave conditions in the channel and at the lee side of the channel especially -for longer waves travelling under a small angle with the channel -due to the neglect of the effects of wave tunneling by diffraction and evanescent modes. The phase-resolving non-hydrostatic 3D model SWASH does include these effects and performs reasonably well, though computational CPU demands are much higher. A modelling guideline is presented for application to other situations, showing that these effects need to be taken into account in optimizing the (layout) of the harbor; otherwise it may lead to under-or overestimation of the wave conditions and wave penetration into a harbor basin.

Abstract. High-fidelity numerical models (full process based) facilitate accurate simulations of storm responses. For efficient implementation in probabilistic risk assessment, the simulation of a large number (>10,000s) of combinations of offshore hydrodynamic conditions (e.g. wave characteristics, offshore water level, etc.) is often necessary. To optimise this procedure, it can be of interest to concentrate the computation effort by only identifying the critical set of offshore conditions that lead to inundation on key assets for the studied territory (e.g., evacuation routes, hospitals, etc.). However, two limitations exist: 1. full-process based models have large computation time cost, typically of several hours, which often prevent from conducting several simulation scenarios; 2. the full-process based models are expected to present non-linearities (non-regularities) or shocks (discontinuities). In this study, we propose a strategy combining meta-modelling (of type Support Vector Machine) and active learning techniques to track with a limited number of long-UXQQLQJ VLPXODWLRQV WKH FULWLFDO VHW ¶V ERXQGDU\ 7KH GHYHORSPHQWV DUH GRQH RQ D FURVV-shore case, using the process-based SWASH model (computational time of 10 hours for one run). The dynamic forcing conditions are parametrized by storm surge S and significant wave height Hs. We validated the approach with respect to a reference set of 400 long-running simulations in the domain of (S ; Hs). Our tests showed that the tracking of the critical contour can be achieved with a reasonable number of long-running simulations of a few tens.

Résumé :En tranche 3 de projet EMACOP, il s'agit de présenter les mesures in-situ de houle réalisées lors des campagnes hivernales 2014 et 2015 sur le site d'Esquibien (Finistère). Il est proposé de caractériser ces mesures in-situ versus le modèle numérique SWASH, qui a conduit, en tranche 2, à estimer le potentiel houlomoteur du site. La variabilité des données de houle apparaît importante aux différentes échelles spatio-temporelles, aussi bien mensuelle, annuelle ou inter-annuelle. Les résultats obtenus ont montré les limites de validité des mesures réalisées avec des capteurs de pression immergés positionnés en eaux peu profondes près de la digue. L'évaluation des incertitudes des mesures et des données disponibles reste donc délicate. Elle nécessite de réaliser des campagnes de mesures in-situ sur de longues périodes, en privilégiant plusieurs capteurs de pression, d'autres types d'instruments ou des méthodes de traitement de données de capteurs récentes, pour estimer précisément le potentiel houlomoteur aux abords du site.
