“…In Arctic Kongsfjorden where a year-round presence of T. libellula has been recorded, mature females have never been caught, however, juveniles are found in high abundances (Noyon et al, 2011). Vast numbers of T. compressa (then: Parathemisto gaudichaudii) were found washed upon the shore of Northeast England, turning the beaches white, which consisted of females carrying young, eggs, and many recently hatched juveniles (Gray & McHardy, 1967). These examples may corroborate other previous findings (Labat et al, 2005;Noyon et al, 2011) that females release their brood nearshore, entering bays or fjords and subsequently leaving these "nursery" areas.…”

“…Several thousand specimens of Parathemisto were available at the Dove Marine Laboratory, Northumberland, collected in the period 17-23 January 1935, when large numbers were stranded oh the shore there. Fifty specimens of P. gaudichaudi were obtained from a stranding on the Yorkshire coast which took place in June 1966 (Gray & McHardy, 1967). Samples of Parathemisto provided by Fiskeridirektoratets Havforskningsinstitutt, Norway, contained some specimens of P. gaudichaudi.…”

“…In a few stations, we found a nonconstant relationship between densities and biomasses calculated from the 2 successive hauls performed within a few minutes on the same day (see 'Methods'). The most likely explanation was the swarming behaviour of the genus Themisto (Gray & McHardy 1967, Vinogradov et al 1996) that may induce differences in the amount of individuals collected in net samples.…”
