SVM Communications: Interview with writing committee of Advanced Training Statement on vascular medicine and talking points from Paclitaxel Coalition

Abstract

Heart Association (AHA), and American College of Physicians (ACP), with Writing Committee members nominated by these organizations. 1 This document addresses the recommended core competencies of vascular medicine specialists, as well as more advanced competencies that may be achieved by some advanced trainees. To update SVM members on this consensus statement, Dr Daniella Kadian-Dodov, co-chair of the SVM Publications and Communications Committee, interviewed Drs Mark Creager and Naomi Hamburg, co-chairs of the Writing Committee for the consensus.

“… Pillar 1 : Establishing standards for postgraduate training and stimulating the formation of vascular medicine training programs.No contemporary document establishes standards for postgraduate training in vascular medicine better than the 2021 ACC/AHA/SVM/ACP Advanced Training Statement on Vascular Medicine, the first update to these standards since 2004, drafted by a writing committee largely comprised of SVM members and leaders! 1,2 It outlines the ‘secret sauce’ required to produce a competent vascular medicine specialist, and there is no doubt we need more of those. As for stimulating the formation of vascular medicine training programs, we are indebted to the Anticoagulation Forum’s (ACF) Ansell Fellowship Program and its grantor, Janssen, for providing training support for up to 18 1-year general vascular medicine fellowships in North America between 2020 and 2023.…”
