SUVmax on FDG-PET is a predictor of prognosis in patients with maxillary sinus cancer

Abstract: SUVmax of the primary tumor determined by FDG-PET/CT before treatment could be a good surrogate marker for prognostication of maxillary sinus cancer.

“…Standardized uptake value (SUV), a semi-quantitative parameter in 18 F-FDG-PET/CT, is calculated as of the ratio of the FDG concentration to the weight-standardized injected dose in a region of interest (ROI) [9]. The most widely used parameter is SUV max , defined as the maximal SUV value in the ROI and is supposed to be a prognostic marker in some malignancies [6, 1011]. Apart from SUV max , metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and total lesion glycolysis (TLG), as the tumor metabolic and volumetric parameter, are more widely applied in 18 F-FDG-PET/CT recently [12].…”

“…These quantifiers have been used with F-18-FDG PET/CT, with the prognostic significance of different particular values reported across various tumor locations. [151617] In the present study, the MTV was identified as a prognostic factor for PFS, suggesting that it is the greater tumor volume that corresponds to poor disease outcome. Observations in line with this hypothesis have already been published for meningiomas; it must be noted that these studies did not use functional imaging (CT and MRI were performed).…”

“…Doi et al 18 reported similar findings focusing on baseline PET/CT scan performed only in maxillary sinus cancer. The authors included 29 (93.5%) subjects with SCC in their study and concluded that SUVmax was significantly correlated with PFS and OS.…”

“…1 In this setting, their assessment is based on radiological evaluation with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR), which are pivotal for their correct evaluation. [8][9][10] In the last decades, however, use of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ( 18 F-FDG PET/CT) has emerged as an important tool for the evaluation of SNC, given its ability to provide information on both metabolic activity and extension of disease. Furthermore, its role in demonstrating nodal and distant metastases has been extensively proved.…”
