Suture repair of umbilical hernia during caesarean section: a case–control study

Abstract: Despite a high recurrence rate, internal suture repair of a symptomatic umbilical hernia during elective caesarean section should be offered to women if requested. No additional morbidity or scar is added to caesarean section. Internal repair is faster, and cosmetic results are better, additional skin or fascia dissection is avoided, and it seems to be as effective as an external approach. Yet, women must be informed on the high recurrence rate.

“…This can be performed via one single Pfannestiel incision with abdominal wall lifted upwards and umbilical hernia repaired via the same incision; or alternatively, with a separate paraumbilical incision. Combined Caesarean section and umbilical hernia repair are associated with negligible immediate post‐operative complication but longer operative time and significant recurrence, ranging from 2% to 28% 16,17 . These findings have limited the general adoption of such combined approach.…”

“…65 On the other hand, a high rate of post-operative wound complications were reported, although, comparable to that following a standard elective cesarean section has been observed by some researchers. 66,67 Evidence supports the combined procedure of cesarean section and hernia repair, thereby concluding that it is feasible and safe. 65 …”
