Downstream Refineries and Chemical Plants have benefited from real time optimization systems (RTO) for the last 30 years. Downstream RTO is a well established and permanent fixture in many plants – the "way we do things ‘round here!". Upstream E&P operations have "come to this party" much more recently and are using RTO more sparingly, even though the economic and HSSE benefits can be very significant. There are key differences between downstream and upstream. For example, downstream facilities do not deal with sub-surface uncertainties, multiphase flow and isolated/harsh environments; while upstream operations do not usually have to deal with complex chemical processes. Integrated Oil Companies run upstream and downstream operations and integration of tools/practices across both regimes is often perceived to be of significant value. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast downstream and upstream RTO learnings with a view to identifying and describing: similarities in production unit operations e.g. fluid separation, compression etc.; key differences between production unit operations; cultural differences between operations; RTO activities from a technical perspective; RTO business benefits and how these might be leveraged and sustained in both directions. What will emerge from this analysis will be a comparison, highlighting points of commonality and differences, leading to a better understanding of how RTO can be more effectively exploited in the upstream business – the cheapest oil available! Specifically, it is concluded that RTO in upstream operations is feasible and lucrative, but is relatively rare with sustainability a challenge. Downstream RTO is more common and sustainable, significantly less lucrative, but a "must do" to compete in a highly competitive, margin constrained business.

The Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) field is a giant oil development located in the Azerbaijan Sector of the Caspian Sea. The presence of multiple layers and a secondary gas cap has seeded a range of transient phenomena that includes well slugging, cross flow and gas coning. Dynamic transients seen across the field have contributed to a detrimental impact on production. Well slugging has led to the failure of downhole screens and decreased production. The cross-flow of water between the different reservoir layers is another problem that can increase the water cut by 30% during start up, making it extremely difficult to return a well to production. The gas to oil ratio (GOR) remains very dynamic. When shut in, gas will migrate away from the well bore leaving little free gas to lift the oil. Similarly, the GOR will rise during periods of production as gas is coned into the well. As a result production can be backed out. Underpinned by extensive dynamic modelling work, BP, together with its Partners and the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic, has been successful in deploying technology to assist in stabilising and enhancing production across the ACG field. Well uptime has been improved by optimising the dynamic transients during start-up. Conditioning the well before it is shut in has proved effective at reducing the cross-flow of water that occurs immediately afterwards. In this paper, the challenge of optimising the dynamic transients across the ACG field will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be given to the solutions developed to address the underlying transient phenomena and how these solutions were deployed at scale and pace across the field.

Starting up a subsea production system for large offshore developments is a time-consuming task that can take multiple hours or days. The startup is particularly inefficient during an unplanned shutdown, where the operator may have a threshold time (e.g., 4–6 hours) to fix the problem and startup the production system, before having to preserve the field. The workflow discussed in this paper aims to determine and reduce the startup time of a subsea production system (SPS). At the center of the workflow, a dynamic integrated model is used to accurately assess and effectively adjust scheduled startup time of the SPS. The integrated model evaluates the dynamic simulation response of a large field startup by integrating a reservoir and gathering network model. The overall workflow incorporates subsurface simulation model, equipment design, field layout design, control systems, and system constraints to create a complete field architecture capable of handling quick, efficient field startups throughout the field life. The integrated workflow presented in this paper captures a full dynamic response, from the reservoir to the topside. Among other things, a full reservoir model has been integrated with a full dynamic network model that allows for startup evaluation and adjustment to be performed at different points throughout the field life.
