Sustained Attention in Methadone Patients

Abstract: Sustained attention was examined in chronic, high-dose (70-120 mg) methadone patients with a modified Continuous Performance Test (Rosvold et al., 1956) 45 min in duration. Working and nonworking patient groups, and drug-free ex-addict and opiate-naive comparison groups were tested at high, moderate, and low signal rates. Groups did not differ overall in accuracy, response latencies, or commission errors. The working patients, however, performed better at the high than at the lower signal rates, and had poorer… Show more

“…We believe additional investigations are warranted to better understand the development of changes in cognitive abilities over time in protracted opiate abstinence. Appel and Gordon (1982) and Sivan (1991). Table 1 Demographic data and substance use history of methadone maintained, protracted abstinence, and healthy control groups Lifetime history of any substance use in former opiate abusers and control subjects who met inclusionary and exclusionary criteria (see Section 2) as a percent of group membership Neuropsychological performance of methadone maintained, protracted abstinent, and healthy control subjects calculated with years of education as a covariate …”

Patient group sizes studied were between 9 and 54 subjects, with doses ranging between 2 and 150 mg.…”

“…Regarding attention and concentration tests, patients generally seem to perform less well, with the exception of one study result [3] where group difference was qualified as not significant (no descriptive statistics given). According to one other study without descriptive statistics, the overall test performance of methadone patients, at least regarding the group of nonemployed patients, is worse [4].…”
