With the increasing population, the amount of wastewater that needs to be managed is also increasing. Population growth also increases energy demand. While treating wastewater containing organic matter and water, hydrogen energy can be produced at the same time. In this study, microbial fuel cells, dark fermentation, supercritical water gasification, and photobioreactors that produce hydrogen from wastewater have been evaluated and prioritized for the first time in terms of benefit, opportunity, cost, and risk criteria. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) technique and benefit, opportunity, cost, and risk (BOCR) model have been used to achieve this aim. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was performed to determine critical criteria for prioritizing technologies. With the analytic hierarchy process technique, it was determined that the criterion with the highest priority was benefit (53%), while the sub-criterion with the highest priority was technological development (33%) followed by operating cost (15%) and compliance with sustainability (12%). Supercritical water gasification technology was found to be the top priority with the AHP technique. In the BOCR model, dark fermentation was determined to be the highest priority technology. In the sensitivity analysis, changes in the weights of the opportunity and cost criteria showed that these criteria were critical. The results obtained show that dark fermentation, which is a technology close to the development, is preferred in the first rank because it has less risk and can produce a high rate of hydrogen. This study could spur more R&D work for researchers to industrialize this technology. It can also give an idea for different studies to researchers.

Anaerobic digestion (AnD) is a process that allows the conversion of organic waste into a source of energy such as biogas, introducing sustainability and circular economy in waste treatment. AnD is an intricate process because of multiple parameters involved, and its complexity increases when the wastes are from different types of generators. In this case, a key point to achieve good performance is optimisation methods. Currently, many tools have been developed to optimise a single AnD plant. However, the study of a network of AnD plants and multiple waste generators, all in different locations, remains unexplored. This novel approach requires the use of optimisation methodologies with the capacity to deal with a highly complex combinatorial problem. This paper proposes and compares the use of three evolutionary algorithms: ant colony optimisation (ACO), genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimisation (PSO), which are especially suited for this type of application. The algorithms successfully solve the problem, using an objective function that includes terms related to quality and logistics. Their application to a real case study in Catalonia (Spain) shows their usefulness (ACO and GA to achieve maximum biogas production and PSO for safer operation conditions) for AnD facilities.

This study benchmarks vermifiltration (VF) as secondary wastewater treatment in three natured-based decentralized treatment plants using life-cycle assessment. The comparison is justified by the comparatively easier and cheaper operation of VF when compared to more traditional technologies, including small rate infiltration (SRI), constructed wetlands (CW), and activated sludge (AS). Standard life cycle assessment was used and applied to three case-studies located in southern Europe. Material intensity during construction was highest for VF, but impacts during operation were lower, compensating those of the other phases. Impacts during the construction phase far outweigh those of operation and dismantling for facilities using constructed wetlands and activated sludge, when the number of served inhabitants is small, and due to lack of economies of scale. VF used as secondary treatment showed to contribute to reduce the environmental impacts, mainly in constructed wetlands and activated sludge. The replacement of CW by VF seems to bring important environmental benefits in most impact categories, in particular in the construction phase. The replacement by VF in facilities with SRI seems to result in the improvement of some of the impact categories, in particular in the operation phase. As for dismantling, no conclusive results were obtained.
