Sustainable Use of Apple Pomace (AP) in Different Industrial Sectors

Abstract: In many countries, apple pomace (AP) is one of the most produced types of agri-food waste (globally, it is produced at a rate of ~4 million tons/year). If not managed properly, such bio-organic waste can cause serious pollution of the natural environment and public health hazards, mainly due to the risk of microbial contamination. This review shows that AP can be successfully reused in different industrial sectors—for example, as a source of energy and bio-materials—according to the idea of sustainable develop… Show more

“…Due to the significant amount of apple pomace produced worldwide (~4 million tons year −1 ), strategies other than energy production are being explored and evaluated regarding the environmental impact generated. 76 For example, technological alternatives for obtaining natural active compounds, 77 the production of acrylic acid, 78 n-butanol, acetone and ethanol, 79 biosuccinic acid, 80 pectin, and fermentable sugars, 67 among others, can be used as food ingredients. 81 Cerutti et al 40 selected the best parameters for an LCA application in fruit-production systems and showed great potential for the absorption and net storage of CO 2 , but specific models for orchard systems were omitted.…”

“…[ 193 ]. As was reported by Gołębiewska et al [ 194 ], despite medicine and cosmetics, apple pomace phytochemicals found recent applications in building and construction industries as green corrosion inhibitors and wood protectors [ 194 ].…”

“…In the last 25 years, apple pomace has been used to produce several products, such as enzymes, polygalacturonases or hydrolytic depolymerases, involved in the degradation of pectic substances. It has also been applied in food and textile processing [ 73 , 74 ]. Apple pomace has been used as a substrate for bioethanol production [ 75 ] and biopolymer synthesis, such as fungal chitosan [ 72 ].…”
