Sustainable Soil Management for Food Security in South Asia

Abstract: The soils of South Asia provide food to almost 1.8 billion people but are prone to many sustainability issues. The ever-increasing population has put enormous pressure on the available natural resources (land/soil and water), which is threatening future food security. The fertile farmlands are being encroached by urbanzation. Declining groundwater levels, increasing micronutrient deficiencies, the use of fertile soil for brick making, degrading soil structure, and global warming are serious sustainability issu… Show more

“…The authors also note that it is necessary to identify and provide farmers with special technologies for resource-saving agriculture for specific plots. Better agricultural land must be protected from encroachment by the city, and cooperation between scientists, farmers and politicians is needed to manage the soil to ensure food security (Nawaz et al 2020).…”

“…The herbicides kill sesbania plants, which shed topical biomass into the soil and serve as a mulch and source of SOM, suppress weed emergence, and improves soil health (Nawaz et al, 2017;Orwa et al, 2009). Several studies have evaluated the effect of sesbania manuring on the soil health and weeds density in RWCS and several other crops (Maitra & Zaman, 2017;Nawaz et al, 2017Nawaz et al, , 2021. Similarly, the allelopathic potential of sorghum has also been reported to suppress weeds in cereals especially wheat and rice (Cheema & Khaliq, 2000;Farooq et al, 2017;Hussain et al, 2020).…”

“…It could significantly affect the soil characteristics, such as soil water conservation capacity, soil temperature and infiltration through mechanical agitation of the soil (Borrelli et al, 2020). This mechanical manipulation could increase the porosity of the soil and facilitate soil gaseous exchange, eradicate the weed and reduce the detrimental effect of agrochemical production (Nawaz et al, 2021). It could be divided into two categories: primary and secondary tillage (Lobb, 2008).…”
