Sustainable remediation and redevelopment of brownfield sites

Abstract: Widespread pollution from industrial activities has driven land degradation with detrimental human health effects, especially in urban areas. Remediation and redevelopment of the estimated 5 million brownfield sites globally is needed to support the sustainable transition and increase urban ecosystem services, but many traditional strategies are often environmentally harmful. In this Review, we outline sustainable remediation strategies for the clean-up of contaminated soil and groundwater at brownfield sites.… Show more

“…Traditional in situ thermal remediation methods are more efficient and expedient, providing a positive environmental value. 2 However, this technique is highly energy-intensive and, consequently, has a substantial carbon footprint. The subsurface temperature, a metric that can be captured in real time throughout the entire span of ISTD, demonstrates a real-time association with both the proficiency of NAPL removal and the energy consumption implicated in ISTD.…”

“…1 A plethora of industrial sites located within urban centers have been contaminated and subsequently abandoned. 2 These sites are distributed over a vast area and present a substantial challenge for redevelopment. Prior to undertaking any development activities, it is essential that these sites undergo extensive remediation to mitigate any potential environmental risks and prevent adverse environmental consequences.…”
