Sustainable production system: literature review and trends

Abstract: PurposeThe objective is to carry out a thorough literature review and analysis of sustainable production system (SPS) and identify avenues for the future research.Design/methodology/approachA sample of 903 articles published from 1996 to 2019 in 40 journals were considered in the analysis. The classification and analysis of articles was done based on: time, focus area, methodology, research stream, authorship, industry sector, critical elements, implementation status, type of support and performance. Based on … Show more

“…Most decisions regarding the sustainability of a product are made during the design phase, so if rigorous data on the recycled material are not available in terms of functional and technological specifications, then it is really difficult to carry out a virtual validation in the early stages of the development process. Some data, such as energy consumption, carbon footprint, recycled percentage and material toxicity, have obvious ecological connections; however, it is not these but the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties that play a more important role in minimizing the ecological impact (Jasti et al , 2022; Merschak et al , 2022).…”

“…Although CSC sustainability follows the triple bottom linkages phenomenon of sustainability (environmental, societal, and economic), environmental sustainability requires more serious attention due to the severe environmental impact of its logistics operations and related activities (Babagolzadeh et al. , 2020; Jasti et al. , 2022; Jouzdani and Govindan, 2021).…”

“…The sustainability development in CSC aims to improve its sustainability parameters without compromising the product's desired safety and quality standard and overall value for the allied stakeholders and societal needs (Bottani et al, 2019;Mangla et al, 2020;. “…Despite volumes of research on sustainability, very few research works were done to find and analyze main reason of failure of implementation of SSCM practices in organizations. Those works are restricted to particular fields of manufacturing sector instead of considering entire production processes all together (Jasti et al , 2022). The aim of this study is to identify the implementation status of SSCM practices in Indian smart manufacturing organizations by selecting the existing SSCM frameworks from the literature and finding out the most appropriate one for the implementation in Indian smart manufacturing organizations.…”
