Sustainable production of hydrogen via steam reforming of furfural (SRF) with Co-catalyst supported on sepiolite

Abstract: Natural sepiolite is a mineral very abundant in Spain, being the main producer worldwide. This material is presented by the first time as promised support to prepare cobalt catalysts with high activity and hydrogen selectivity in the steam reforming of furfural (SRF). Two methods for cobalt incorporation on natural sepiolite, precipitation (PP) and incipient wetness impregnation (IWI), are explored and their influence in the preparation of catalysts highly active and selective in the SRF is studied. PP method … Show more

“…A hydrothermal‐assisted impregnation approach was used to create M‐modified Ni/SEP catalysts (M=La, Mg, or Ca), and their catalytic performance for SRE was fully investigated. Sepiolite (SEP) is a mineral with the formula[Si 12 Mg 8 O 30 (OH) 4 (H 2 O) 4 .8H 2 O] is a magnesium‐rich hydrated silicate mineral with a wide natural distribution and low mining costs [96,97] . By collaborating with the surface alkaline/acid sites and metal‐support interaction, the surface Ni 0 active site quantity and Ni particle size play a vital role in promoting catalytic activity by enhancing the capability of cracking C−C and C−H bonds and influencing the coke deposition process.…”

CaÀ Ni/SEP had the greatest carbon conversion (95 %) and hydrogen yield (65 %) among the modified catalysts, which was attributed to its well-dispersed small Ni particles, the most surface Ni 0 active species, and modified surface alkaline/acid sites.…”
