Sustainable polyvinyl acetals from bioaromatic aldehydes

Abstract: Water-degradable polyvinyl acetals with high glass transition temperatures (114–157 °C) were made via acetalization of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with bioaromatic aldehydes.

“…73,74,76 It was also noted that HBP 5 showed higher T g compared with 6, which was ascribed to the strong polar interactions of the isatin units in 5, as well as the increased free volume of 6 caused by the flexible methoxy end-groups. 77 HBPs 5 and 6 are both amorphous without a melting endotherm, which is clearly different from the small molecules 4 and 7 (melting points of 105 and 144°C, respectively). Furthermore, according to the TGA data ( Fig.…”

“…Miller and co-workers reported a series of polyvinyl aromatic acetals, which were obtained from the condensation of commercially available poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sustainable aromatic aldehydes including vanillin ( M1G ), syringaldehyde ( M1S ), and other 11 aldehydes (route 18). 385 Polymeric nanoparticles based on poly(vanillin oxalate) (PVO), were developed by Lee and co-workers (route 19). 386 These nanoparticles presented great potential as novel antioxidant therapeutics and drug delivery systems.…”

“…Rostagno et al 385 studied the synthesis of polyvinyl aromatic acetals from the condesation of commercially available poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and sustainable aromatic aldehydes [12 aromatic aldehydes including vanillin ( M1G ) and syringaldehyde ( M1S )] ( Figure 32 , route 18). Importantly, the T g values in the obtained polymers reached 114–157 °C compared to 75 °C of PVA.…”

“…4a Postpolymerization modification of poly(vinyl alcohol) has also been employed. 7 Although ROP offers greater control over molecular weight and dispersity, step-growth polymerization can be used with a wider variety of monomers, which can lead to more diverse polymer architectures. For example, Miller and coworkers prepared biorenewable polyalkylene acetals via acetal metathesis polymerization of α,ω-diols.…”
