h i g h l i g h t sSND was observed in a multi-channel OD at very low DO of 0.10-0.25 mg L À1 . SND was identified by micro-environment characteristics within tiny flocs. The highest SND occupied 44.1% of influent nitrogen mass by NMB analysis. The maximum SND efficiency was 79% with SND rate of 5.09 mg L À1 h À1 . a r t i c l e i n f o t r a c tSimultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) was evidently observed in a full-scale multi-channel oxidation ditch (OD), especially occurring within the outer channel under microaerophilic conditions. The optimum average dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration for SND was 0.25 mg L À1 with 79% SND efficiency and 5.09 mg L À1 h À1 SND rate, leading to 74.9% overall TN removal efficiency. Small sized flocs consisting of more nitrifying bacteria enhanced nitrification in favor of SND due to less oxygen diffusion limitation inside flocs than larger flocs under micro-aerated conditions. SND was also identified by co-existing of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria as well as some microaerophilic microorganisms based on molecular biology analysis. Nitrogen mass balances (NMB) quantitatively demonstrated that the highest SND efficiency accounted for 44.1% of influent nitrogen mass. Above valuable findings might deeply reveal SND as a principal mechanism of nitrogen removal in a multi-channel OD from macro-to micro-scale.

A novel combined process was proposed to treat municipal landfill leachate with high concentrations of ammonium and organics. This process consisted of a partial nitritation reactor (PNR), an anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) reactor (AR) and two underground soil infiltration systems (USIS-1 and USIS-2). Based on the optimum operating conditions obtained from batch tests of individual unit, the combined process was continuously operated on a bench scale for 166 days. Partial nitritation was performed in a fixed bio-film reactor (PNR, working volume = 12 L). Ammonium nitrogen-loading rate (Nv) and DO were combined to monitor partial nitritation, and at T = 30 ± 1• C, Nv = 0.27-1.2 kg/(m 3 ·d), The test results indicated that the combined system could work stably over a long period under the operating conditions, and that the process was feasible for the leachate treatment. AR should be the key to the performance of the combined process.

Neste trabalho simulou-se a desnitrificação via nitrito em lixiviado de aterro sanitário, operando-se em escala laboratorial através de um reator em batelada sequencial (RBS) adicionando-se melaço de cana como fonte externa alternativa de carbono. As razões DBOlixiviado+melaço/N-NOx estudadas foram 0,37; 4; 12 e 14 com tempo de reação anóxica de 4,33 h (DBO/N-NOx=0,37; 4 e 14) e 22 h (DBO/N-NOx=12). A taxa específica de desnitritação foi de 0,07 kg nitrito.kg-1 sólidos suspensos voláteis (SSV)*dia após 4,33 h de reação anóxica nos ensaios sem adição de melaço de cana e 0,19 e 0,12 kg nitrito.kg-1 SSV*dia nos ensaios realizados com adição de melaço de cana, fornecendo uma razão DBO/N-NOx de 4 e 14, respectivamente. Ampliando-se o tempo de reação anóxica para 22 h e realizando os ensaios sob razão DBO/N-NOx de 12, a taxa específica de desnitritação foi aumentada para 0,55 kg nitrito.kg-1 SSV*dia.
