Sustainable Mobilities in the Neighborhood: Methodological Innovation for Social Change

Abstract: The German federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg with its regional capital Stuttgart is a major field for the mobility transition in Europe. As one of seven living labs in the state, MobiQ—Sustainable Mobility through Sharing in the Neighborhood follows a civil society, non-commercial approach. Utilizing the research design of living labs, research and practice work hand in hand to promote citizen participation in co-designing and co-producing neighborhood-based, and developing shared mobility solutions. The spa… Show more

“…Overall, it can be stated that SMSPs' concepts and solutions piloted via the LL-in which all involved stakeholders exchange learning/piloting practices, tools for monitoring, and control and evaluation of pilots-address a holistic sustainability transition, which covers the operational, economic, social, and institutional dimensions. This is in line with the scholarly insights supporting perception and growth of LLs as iterative collaborative platforms for co-creation and experimentation [193][194][195]. In this sense, SMSPs are well equipped to adapt pilot processes and activities to their own port ecosystems and, thus, to enable contribution to or development of sustainable outputs, outcomes, and impacts.…”

“…By emphasising the value of sustained mobility and robust social interactions, societies have the potential to unlock the treasure trove of experience and wisdom held by the elderly. This symbiotic relationship, where both seniors and their communities stand to benefit, ushers in a more holistic, resilient and tightly knit societal fabric (Kesselring et al, 2023). The elderly become active participants, not only in their own lives but also as valued contributors to the larger collective community or society.…”

“…Social innovation is one of the pillars of sustainability that is becoming increasingly important as one of the dimensions that merit a multidisciplinary and transversal approach [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9], where the active participation of citizens is required not only as recipients [10] but also as co-creators of their reality. In this sense, a series of mechanisms and strategies have emerged that seek to involve citizens in decision-making processes in the city, such as participatory budgets, urban centres, living labs [11,12], and innovation centres, in which synergies are created between civil society, public administration, academia, and companies [13] to seek solutions to social challenges; these strategies and platforms are usually guided by public administration. On the other hand, another type of participation and appropriation of space mechanism called Citizens' Initiatives (CIs) are born in a spontaneous but conscientious way.…”
