Sustainable management of coastal saline soils in the Saloum river Basin, Senegal

Abstract: Salinization of soils is one of the major environmental problems facing the world. Frequent tidal intrusions and continuous decrease of annual rainfall support the salinization of soils in the coastal area of the Saloum river Basin, West Central of Senegal, West Africa. This study aimed at appreciating the spatial variability of soil salinity along a levee to backswamp toposequence in the Saloum River basin; in order to assess the constraints and potentialities of these saline soils and propose sustainable soi… Show more

“…Rainfed rice cultivation has been traditionally carried out in the lowlands of the Casamance River basin (South Senegal). These areas are influenced by seawater salinity, with tidal flows as far as 100 km inland from the coastal line [43]. In one of the secondary valleys, the Santack Valley near Ziguinchor (Figure 1), Caritas Spain collaborated with Caritas Ziguinchor and funded a project to recover soil from growing rainfed rice.…”

“…En effet, dans nos études précédentes, nous avons montré que l'amendement organique permet d'améliorer la capacité du sol à résister au stress salin (Sall et al, 2015) à travers une stimulation de l'activité biologique. D'autres auteurs ont montré que l'ajout de résidus organiques permet de réduire le pourcentage de sodium échangeable (ESP) et la conductivité électrique (CE) et d'augmenter la capacité de rétention d'eau et la stabilité globale (Qadir et al, 2001 ;Fall, 2017).…”

“…To maintain the low salinity level achieved by infiltration of meltwater from saline ice, mulching (M) has been introduced and proven to be an efficient way to control the salinity in the root zone ( Guo and Liu, 2015 ). Mulching could reduce soil-water evaporation and thereby prevent soluble salt from moving up with water flow and accumulating in the topsoil ( Sadegh-Zadeh et al, 2009 ; Fall, 2017 ).…”
