Sustainable location and route planning with GIS for waste sorting centers, case study: Kerman, Iran

Abstract: One of the important issues in the world is the significant growth of waste production, including waste that is not biodegradable in nature. According to the Kerman Municipality, 440 tonnes of municipal waste is collected daily in Kerman consisting of five major parts of paper, plastic, metal, glass, and wet waste. The major problems of municipal solid waste disposal are soil erosion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. “…It is always the least desirable option to develop landfills in close proximity to natural reserves (Sener et al, 2010). Concomitant with higher population densities is more extensive urbanization (Farahbakhsh and Forghani, 2019). Further, the higher the GDP in a given location, the higher its economic level and the higher the added value of land will be (Aracil et al, 2018).…”

“…Furthermore, the VRP has been studied widely in the literature for various real-world applications (Mirmohammadi et al, 2017;Tirkolaee et al, 2017Tirkolaee et al, , 2019, but CARP has been almost neglected despite its effective practical aspects, particularly in USWM (Tirkolaee et al, 2018a). Moreover, some researchers have worked on the application of a Geographic Information System to construct optimal routing for USWM (Farahbakhsh and Forghani, 2019;Sanjeevi and Shahabudeen, 2016).…”

“…waste sites, disposal centers, etc.) (see, e.g., Abdelli et al, 2016; Erfani et al, 2017; Farahbakhsh and Forghani, 2019; Khan and Samadder, 2016). For example, Khan and Samadder (2016) identified the optimum routes of 22 trucks that could collect three times per day after the allocation of waste bins in Dhanbad City, India.…”
