With the continuous increase in carbon dioxide emissions due to human activities and the resulting severe climate issues, there is global concern about energy conservation and emission reduction. However, detailed data on energy consumption and emissions at a fine-grained scale, particularly regarding spatial dimensions and sector-specific emissions, remains insufficient and in need of refinement and timely updates. In Japan, following the Fukushima nuclear disaster, there has been a significant shift from nuclear power generation to reliance on fossil fuels across various sectors, highlighting disparities in emissions data across different regions and industries. Our work extends the emissions time series for Japan’s 47 prefectures, incorporating their socioeconomic characteristics over a broader time frame and with a more detailed sectoral classification. The emissions inventory, covering the period from 1990 to 2020, is based on the consumption of the three main fossil fuels across 32 sectors, with emissions carefully allocated for regional power generation. This dataset, presented in a unified format, is expanded to include longer time scales and more detailed socioeconomic data. It is anticipated to offer crucial insights for establishing regional emission reduction targets and identifying sectoral priorities for decarbonization.

The strategic objective of world climate policy is the decarbonization of industries, aiming to achieve “net-zero” emissions by 2050, as outlined in the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement. This transition entails increasing the utilization of renewable energy sources (RES) in industrial energy consumption, thereby transforming economies from reliance on fossil fuels to sustainable alternatives. However, this shift poses a significant challenge for many EU countries, with varying degrees of success in adaptation. This paper investigates the process of decarbonizing industries by analyzing trends in the adoption of RES in EU countries and evaluating their progress toward climate targets. Utilizing time series analysis of production, total energy usage, and the proportion of renewables in industrial energy consumption, the study compares two groups of countries: longstanding EU members and newer additions. The aim is to forecast the trajectory of RES integration in industry and assess the feasibility of meeting the targets outlined in the European Green Deal. The findings reveal a considerable gap between the set targets and projected outcomes, with only a few countries expected to meet the EU’s 2030 goals. This is highlighted by disparities in RES shares across member states, ranging from 0.0% to 53.8% in 2022. Despite notable increases in the absolute use of renewable energy, particularly in central and eastern European nations, substantial challenges persist in aligning industrial sectors with EU decarbonization objectives.

To comprehensively assess the balance between carbon emission and carbon sequestration from a spatiotemporal perspective, research on the spatiotemporal characteristics and transition mechanisms of carbon pressure in central-south Liaoning urban agglomeration (CSLUA) at the county level from 2002 to 2017, is conducted through nesting spatiotemporal leaps and quantile regression. Research results suggest that: (1) The overall carbon pressure index (CPI) of districts and counties in CSLUA shows an increasing trend and exhibits a spatial pattern of higher pressure in the west and lower pressure in the east, with severe overload in the central areas of west. (2) The overall spatial distribution of CPI shows significant high-high agglomeration and low-low agglomeration. The local spatial structure of carbon pressure is relatively stable, showing path dependence and transfer inertia. The central areas of west demonstrate stronger dynamism, while the eastern areas are relatively stable. (3) Most districts and counties in CSLUA are predominantly influenced by the environment technology constraint pattern. Small parts of regions located in the central areas of western cities were influenced by the industry-population-driven and economy-human-urbanization driven patterns. Therefore, the green and low-carbon development needs to jointly consider the regional development characteristics, driving factors, agglomeration types, and transition paths. It is important to design differentiated and coordinated emission reduction strategies based on local conditions while considering spatial correlation, and to establish an inter-regional collaborative governance mechanism. In this manner, co-reduction and co-optimization of carbon emissions can be accomplished through effective pilot implementation strategies and successful regions encouragement.
