Sustainable Highway Maintenance: Optimization of Existing Highway Vertical Alignment Considering Pavement Condition

Abstract: Any change in the geometric configuration of the existing road affects other dependent elements such as travel time, fuel consumption, and existing pavement. This paper quantifies these effects and finds an optimum geometric configuration. Three separate models are developed in this research: (1) the travel time model which predicts vehicles flow speed on the specified geometric condition, traffic composure, and evaluates the imposed costs to the road users; (2) the fuel consumption model, which estimates need… Show more

“…To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first paper to investigate the PSO algorithm for the calibration of driver behavior model parameters. Particle swarm optimization is used to develop train timetables [29], optimize the structure of short-term traffic flow prediction models [30], optimize traveler information systems [31], and to optimize the vertical alignment of roadways to reduce travel time, fuel consumption, and costs associated with the maintenance of pavements [32].…”

“…To solve the above problems, numerous researchers have devoted considerable efforts to alignment optimization since the 1960s [1]. In the 20th century, some exact mathematical methods have been proposed, such as the calculus of variation [2] and enumeration [3].…”

“…In addition to new roads, existing roads are maintained/modified for accident vulnerability prevention, traffic flow enhancement, etc. These maintenance tasks often result in change in road geometry features [16]. Typically, estimation of road transverse slope is done by extensive surveys conducted by instrumented vehicles [5,17].…”
