Sustainable harvest of two large predatory catfish in the Cuiabá river basin, northern Pantanal, Brazil

Abstract: Fishery is an important economic activity in the Pantanal. Among the region's species, the Pimelodidae catfish stands out as an important part of the annual catch. This study assesses the structure, exploitation and stock management of Hemisorubim platyrhynchos and Sorubim cf. lima, the sixth and seventh largest Pimelodidae of the Pantanal. The analysis is based on fish caught by commercial fishing in the Cuiabá river and landed at the "Antônio Moysés Nadaf" Market in the Cuiabá city, Mato Grosso state, Brazil… Show more

“…(), H. platyrhynchos is a nocturnal carnivorous fish. Like others Pimelodidae, H. platyrhynchos is predator of others fish and is therefore important for the functioning of aquatic ecosystems (Penha and Mateus, ). In addition, there has been a reduction in the population size of the species due to habitat destruction as a result of the construction of hydroelectric dams that interrupt the flow of migration required for reproduction (Bressan et al ., ).…”

“…Spawning followed by migration of adults belongs to the southern and western areas to feed zones in the Norwegian Sea and the North Sea, El-Dengawy et al, 2017.There are two spawning contingents; a southern group that spawns primarily in the Mid-Atlantic Bight and Gulf of Maine from mid-April to June and a northern contingent that spawns in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence from the end of May to mid-August .The southern contingent begins the spring spawning migration by moving inshore between Delaware Bay and Cape Hatteras, usually between mid-March and mid-April depending to some extent on water temperature (Berrien, 1982). L m50 is an important characteristic of life history essential for prosperity of fishery management, fundamental to establishment of the means that avoid exploitation of young specimens and consequential reduction of spawning stock (Penha and Mateus, 2007). In the present study, the length at first maturity L m05 of S. scombrus in the Mediterranean coast of Sinai during 2019 was 23.2 and 23.4 cm for males and females respectively.…”
