“…Other social issues that appeared in the literature include human rights [ 100 , 101 , 102 ], local communities influence [ 89 , 90 , 103 ], fair trade [ 57 , 100 , 104 ], philanthropy [ 105 ], etc. A recent study [ 106 ] has shed light on modern slavery in supply chains, a new area in the agenda of SSCM that has gained a lot of attention lately.…”

“…This is despite the significant and well‐publicised impacts of food supply chains on biodiversity [Balmford et al, 2012; Phalan et al, ]. While conceptual barriers to dispersed supply chain externalities exist [Rabb and Saunders, ], as well as gaps between values and actions for both individuals [Kollmuss and Agyeman, ; Vermeir and Verbeke, ] and organisations [Hanson and Holt, ], addressing biodiversity impacts in their parallel food supply chains presents zoos with a considerable opportunity, as seen with seafood [Koldewey et al, ; WAZA, 2009]. This is underscored by the identification of global water shortage and food insecurity as one of the top ten emerging issues for species conservation by 2020 from the perspective of zoos and aquariums, and of actions to address it [Gusset et al, ].…”

“…The findings contribute to an enhanced understanding of the factors that affect sustainable supply chain management, especially of food supply chains at the procurement phase. They are also of particular relevance to sustainable food procurement by mission‐led organizations [Pullman and Dillard, ] and build upon inter‐organisational empirical analyses of sustainability in zoos [Oliver, ; Townsend, ] and of sustainable food in zoos [Hanson and Holt, ]. Further research on these themes, especially at the regional or inter‐regional level and with larger sample sizes, would further advance the understanding of the critical factors shaping sustainable food procurement in zoological collections.…”

“…Since then, only 26 peer-reviewed articles have been published which specifically focus on SSCM or GSCM and indicators. As the analysis of these publications furthermore revealed, only Genovese et al [46], Wang et al [47] and Hanson and Holt [48] provide sustainability indicators matching the definition provided in Section 2.2. The majority of the remaining sources (55%) provide no indicators.…”
