Sustainable Extraction of Chitin from Spent Pupal Shell of Black Soldier Fly

Abstract: Chitin and its deacetylated derivative chitosan are used for application in areas as an agriculture, biomedicine, cosmetic, food, textile and chelating agent for wastewater treatment. The current extraction of chitin is based on a chemical process using hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. The main disadvantage of the process is the generation of large volumes of acid and alkaline effluents, which require further treatment before release. Chitin was extracted from spent pupal shell of black soldier fly (BSF… Show more

“…Meanwhile, the wavenumber 1014 cm -1 shows C-O stretching vibrations. The FTIR spectra of chitin produced in this study are similar to previous studies using different shells [28,30,31,32] and chitin isolated from BSF pupae [29,33,34]. A summary of bond vibration value data is in Table 4.…”

“…The DD of chitosan can be calculated based on the FTIR spectrum obtained shown in Figure 1. The DD resulting from this study was 88%, the resulting DD was greater than that of Lin et al [18] which was 81.5%, and less than that of Triunfo et al [19] is 90%. The DD resulting from this study met the quality standards of SNI No.7949-2013, namely ≥75%.…”

“…A comparison was possible with the work of Lin et al . 83 , that investigated the MIC value of pupal exuviae chitosan from H. illucens on P. aeruginosa and S. aureus; the MIC values of our bleached and unbleached chitosan were lower on Gram-positive species (0.15 and 0.3 mg/ml vs 0.6 mg/ml), while they were higher on the Gram-negative species (0.3 and 0.15 mg/ml vs 0.04 mg/ml), respectively.
