Sustainable Energy Development in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Abstract:The main objective of this research is to study the role of energy consumption in economic growth in Saudi Arabia over the period of 1971-2012 using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) cointegration procedure, and based on neoclassical growth, endogenous growth, and ecological-economics viewpoints. Our empirical results show the existence of a cointegrating relationship between the different variables investigated. In addition, all the inputs (conventional and non-conventional) Granger cause eco… Show more

“…Policy recommendation in this literature, if at all given, follow a standard green growth repertoire. Some studies which found that growth in energy use Granger-causes GDP growth even argued that saving energy should be viewed cautiously as a policy goal, as it could threaten GDP growth (Yu 2012, Belloumi andAlshehry 2015). Figure 1 summarizes the strategies and policy recommendations given in the articles according to their frequency.…”

“…For this purpose, we used the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). It is clear from the Graph 1, that the model ARDL(4,0,0) is the optimal model since it has the lowest AIC criterion (for more details see Belloumi (2014) and Belloumi and Alshehry (2015)). Now, we move towards determining the cointegrating relationship among the variables.…”

“…However, when the value of the F-statistic is inferior to the lower critical value, we accept the null hypothesis and we conclude that the variables are not cointegrated. Lastly, when the F-statistic lies between both critical values, we cannot conclude (Belloumi and Alshehry 2015).…”

“…When the results show that the variables are cointegrated, we estimate the long-run relationship equations, as well as the restricted error correction models given by Equations (5)- (8) to determine the dynamics of the short-run and the speed of adjustment (Belloumi and Alshehry 2015):…”
