Sustainable effects of diatomite on the growth criteria and phytochemical contents of Vicia faba plants

Abstract: Recent scientific findings proved that silicon feeding will provide benefits to plant growth and yield depending on the source of Si, the mode of application , the concentration used, the plant species , the mode of action and the biotic or abiotic factor involved. To better understand the intrinsic properties of Si , this work was conducted using a series of diatomite (diatomaceous earth)at rates of 0,2.5, 5 and 10 g/kg soil, to look into the most subtle changes in the growth , yield, metabolism, electrophare… Show more

“…So, decreases the bypass flow of transpired water that crosses the root cells towards the xylem vessels and provides a barrier to cuticular transpiration (Savvas et al 2009). Such effects of Si increase the relative water content of plant tissues so hold leaves erect and strengthening the stem to prevent lodging that results in improved accommodation of light in plant community thus improving photosynthesis (Abdalla 2009). …”

“…It is chemically composed of Sio 2 (86 to 89%) in a soluble form available to plants and small amount of trace elements. It is considered as a complete, long lasting, recyclable and environmentally friendly soil enhancer by improving the physical structure of soil, aerating the plant ' s root zone, minimizing leaching and runoff thus increasing soil, water retention and reducing watering subsequently, diatomite promotes stronger, healthier, higher-yielding plants that mature quickly and acquire self resistance against abiotic and biotic stresses (Kruger, 2006;Jessen, 2007;Abdalla, 2009 and Abdalla, 2011 a).…”

“…It also increases the synthesis of RNA and DNA. This situation reduces transpiration and chlorophyll destruction, whereas it increases CO₂ assimilation rates which eventually resulted in an elevated rate of growth and yield (Hanafy et al, 2008;Abdalla, 2009;Ulmer, 2010).…”
