Sustainable Economic Growth Based on R&D Amplification and Technological Content of Exports. Evidences from Romania and The V4 Economies

Abstract: A vast body of literature recognizes the importance of exports as a driver of economic growth. The increasing share of more sophisticated exports gave birth to the idea that the composition of exports, and not just exports per se, could be crucial for economic dynamics. The aim of this paper was to estimate the relative importance of exports with different technological content on economic growth in Romania and V4 economies, considering R&D (Research and Development) expenditure as a predictor of the pattern o… Show more

“…The major conclusion of their research suggests that export diversification has positive effect on economic growth but there is no evidence of non-monotonic relationship between export diversification and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Burciu et al (2020) studied Romania and V4 countries (Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) targeting to estimate the relative significance of exports with different technological contents on economic growth. The authors have used panel data analysis and regression models for the period of time between 1995-2017 for the aforementioned economies.…”

“…Many studies have addressed the positive effect of R&D investment and technological innovation on overseas performance, asserting a positive association between innovation and exports (Bigos and Michalik, 2020; Burciu et al. , 2020; Carboni and Medda, 2018).…”

“…Exporting firms are more productive than non-exporting firms because they have a progressive drive toward R&D investment, which is a significant and positive determinant of export performance (Makrini, 2016). Further, R&D investment can also affect the pattern and structure of exports in the innovation process for its returns and market growth (Burciu et al, 2020;Véganzonès-Varoudakis and Plane, 2019). As such, it is expected that both factors working together will contribute to a firm's overall performance.…”

“…Specifically, R&D and export activity plays a prominent role in enhancing firms’ technological capabilities. These enhanced capabilities result in more attractive product offerings and give these firms greater exposure to foreign markets, which not only enhances their shareholder value and future cash flows but also allows them to take advantage of learning opportunities for innovation (Burciu et al , 2020; Niket, 2020).…”
