Sustainable Development, Renewable Resources and Technological Progress

Abstract: Conflicts between optimality and sustainability are typical in the literature on sustainable development. Using a 'capital-resource' model of optimal growth, Pezzey and Withagen (1998) have recently proved that if natural resources are exhaustible, the time-path of consumption is single-peaked, declining from some point in time onwards. This paper extends the model to include technical progress, resource renewability and population growth. The main result is that, for any constant returns to scale technology, … Show more

“…(6) is an additional non-arbitrage condition, which implies that in the equilibrium the prices of the asset and of the extracted energy are the same. This last result is indeed consistent with Olson and Knapp (1997) and Valente (2008). Moreover, notice that Eqs.…”

“…This literature frequently refers to the following three main reasons to prefer OLG to infinitely-lived agent models. First, resources are a store of value between generations (seeKoskela et al 2002;Valente 2008;Bednar- Friedl and Farmer 2013). Second, intergenerational aspects should be taken into account when analyzing environmental issues and/or natural resource economies(Solow 1974;Padilla 2002; Agnani et al 2005).…”

“…Renewable energy sources, as wind, solar, and geothermal power, are widely seen as potential solutions to environmental problems. Therefore, they form an essential part of strategies for sustainable development (Jaramillo-Nieves, Del Río, 2010;Lund, 2007;Valente, 2005). China has prominent role in the literature on PV technologies in developing countries, as it experienced dramatic production growth during a very short period.…”

“…Depending on the locations of such energy resources, one type of technology may be more suitable for economic growth than others (Tuo, 2013a,b;Karlstrøm and Ryghaug, 2014). For economic development, one prefers a large renewable energy proportion in the overall energy profile because it should lead to more sustainable development and more benefits to the economy (Valente, 2005;Apergis and Payne, 2010).…”
