Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have become the backbone of many nations as they contribute immensely to the growth of their economies. In Zimbabwe, they have filled in the gap left by the big companies after the economic crisis of the early 2000s. The impact of SMEs is small when we look at their environmental, economic, and social impact, but when grouped, it becomes a considerable contribution. Evidence from the literature shows that SMEs have a short lifespan. Therefore, sustainability in manufacturing SMEs in emerging economies and their survival strategy have been discussed. This study aimed to examine sustainability in the context of design in furniture-manufacturing SMEs in Zimbabwe. The qualitative study used a purposively selected sample of ten SMEs where the owner and/or manager and designer were the main participants. Observations were also conducted on-site in all ten cases where evidence was noted for analysis. The study reveals that SMEs in emerging economies face many challenges, such as a lack of finance, skilled human resources, and management commitment that hamper their capacity to adopt sustainable design in their practices. Sustainability adoption in these SMEs is more of adherent to the regulatory framework, especially considering the environmental aspect. The study concludes by recommending that policy makers in government should create tax rebate incentives that should be awarded to those SMEs that score highly in all three pillars of sustainability.

This research explores strategies for effectively preparing for and mitigating the impact of seismic natural disasters on individuals and their health. The study underscores the potential for sustainable furniture solutions to play a pivotal role, emphasising the critical need for proactive disaster risk reduction. Drawing on descriptive analysis of case studies from events such as the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, the research employs an analytical framework to examine the application of recycled cardboard furniture in addressing the needs of disaster-prone regions. The study advocates for locally sourced solutions to enhance preparedness, response, and recovery efforts by optimising the utilisation of sustainable furniture, particularly in developing countries like Palestine. The findings suggest that leveraging locally recycled cardboard furniture can offer a scalable, cost-effective approach to furnishing disaster-affected areas, facilitating ease of transportation, storage, and assembly without requiring specialised skills.

Optimizing production processes to conserve resources and reduce waste has become crucial in pursuing sustainable manufacturing practices. The solid wood panel industry, marked by substantial raw materials and energy consumption, stands at the forefront of addressing this challenge. This research delves into production scheduling and equipment utilization inefficiencies, offering innovative solutions for the solid wood panel processing line aimed at achieving environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. The study is articulated through two main segments: (1) an exhaustive analysis and the development of a simulation system for the solid wood panel processing line, delineating all production elements and operational logic, furnished with a user-friendly simulation interface, and (2) a comprehensive evaluation and enhancement of various scheduling algorithms specific to the Flexible Job-Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) encountered in solid wood panel workshops. A significant leap forward is made with the introduction of the Adaptive Intelligent Optimization Genetic Algorithm (AIOGA), an evolved version of the standard Genetic Algorithm (GA) engineered for optimal scheduling within the solid wood panel processing line. AIOGA incorporates advanced features such as encoding strategy, population initialization, objective function setting, selection strategy, crossover operation, and mutation operation, demonstrating the methodological depth of the study. We applied AIOGA in a designed FJSP, and AIOGA substantially reduced the maximum completion time to 90 min. It evidenced an improvement of 39.60% over the conventional GA, enhancing the equilibrium of the equipment workload across the system. This research presents a multifaceted strategy to address the scheduling complications inherent in solid wood panel production and highlights the extensive applicability of adaptive intelligent optimization in diverse industrial settings. This study establishes a new paradigm in manufacturing optimization, underlining the valuable integration of sustainability and efficiency in production methodologies.
