Sustainable construction and low-carbon dioxide concrete: Algeria case

Abstract: 2 3Climate change seems to have had a notable effect on the environment. Natural disasters such as flooding are occurring more frequently but the human effect on the built environment and transportation is the greatest single cause of greenhouse gas emissions. The construction industry consumes a large amount of energy and natural resources, especially in construction materials. Hence, action is needed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, increase recycling and the reuse of materials and reduce water consumptio… Show more

“…Therefore, the useful life of these is prolonged and they can be sustained from generation to generation. The incorporation of recycled aggregates (RA) from C&DW urban waste in concrete and mortar supposes a reduction in the extraction of natural stone and sand from quarries, which contributes to reducing environmental damage to the landscape and ecosystems, greenhouse gases, and the depletion of fossil natural resources [12,13]. Policies like the Europe Union Directive 2018/851 contribute to the increase in the demand of RA in the market and improves the circular economy.…”

“…However, the partial replacement of FNA with FRCA in concrete and mortar is not recommended due to poor hardened properties [24,25]. However, some researchers [13,22,26,27] have begun to study the use of FRCA, confirming that partial replacement of FNA with FRCA does not significantly affect their properties (up to less than 20%). Some researchers have studied the effect of impurities present in recycled aggregates; others have developed techniques to reduce their impurities [26][27][28], since the quality of the FRCA greatly influences the properties of the mixtures.…”

“…The sustainability of concrete is a regular topic in this journal (Higgins, 2012;Hughes, 2006;Kenai et al, 2014), but what makes this paper particularly novel is that it focuses on sustainable lightweight concrete that is suitable for floating foundations. Such foundations are a potential solution to periodic flooding; a likely consequence of climate change.…”
