Sustainable Collective Innovation in the Agri-Food Value Chain: The Case of the “Aureo” Wheat Supply Chain

Abstract: This paper contributes to the theoretical debate in agri-food economics on sustainable innovations. Specifically, it aims to define an interpretative model of sustainable innovation processes conceived at the supply chain level, and the determinants promoting these processes. The paper also proposes a best practice of sustainable collective innovation, namely the “Aureo” wheat supply chain. Sustainable collective innovation requires the commitment and involvement of all actors of the agri-food supply chain, wh… Show more

“…Moreover, some cultivars are legacies of the past, linked to traditional uses, including bread and pasta [ 7 ]. Currently, the commercial interest in bread and pasta made from a single variety or with a prevalence of one or few specific varieties is growing [ 8 ]. Consequently, there is increasing interest in the tracking of specific genotypes along the supply chain, from seeds to grains and transformed products.…”

“…One possible distinction is that agri-food "value chain studies focus more on value appropriation by actors throughout the chain", while the term supply chain is more often used for the management of raw material supply, production, processing, logistics, and distribution [48]. We include the consumer, as proposed by Bukeviciute et al [49], and do not follow definitions where the last step in the supply chain is the distributor and retailer [48,50]. In addition, the value chain captures non-physical activities, such as marketing or product development.…”
