Biomass is a plentiful renewable source of energy, food, feed and chemicals. It fixes about 1–2% of the solar energy received by the Earth through photosynthesis in both terrestrial and aquatic plants like macro- and microalgae. As fossil resources deplete, biomass appears a good complement and eventually a good substitute feedstock, but still needs the development of relatively new catalytic processes. For this purpose, catalytic transformations, whether alone or combined with thermal ones and separation operations, have been under study in recent years. Catalytic biorefineries are based on dehydration-hydrations, hydrogenations, oxidations, epimerizations, isomerizations, aldol condensations and other reactions to obtain a plethora of chemicals, including alcohols, ketones, furans and acids, as well as materials such as polycarbonates. Nevertheless, there is still a need for higher selectivity, stability, and regenerability of catalysts and of process intensification by a wise combination of operations, either in-series or combined (one-pot), to reach economic feasibility. Here we present a literature survey of the latest developments for obtaining value-added products using hexoses and pentoses derived from lignocellulosic material, as well as algae as a source of carbohydrates for subsequent transformations.

Microalgae are biological sources with an extensive range of biotechnological applications, e.g., for bioremediation of industrial and municipal wastes. Microalgae are used to monitor environmental toxicants like pesticides, heavy metals, and pharmaceuticals and in the final stage of wastewater treatment when organic pollution should be removed. CO 2 capturing is also important due to the environmental issues. Macro/microalgae cultures, depending on their growth stages and life cycles, have great poten-tial for CO 2 fixation. They are a dominant group of microorganisms for biological treatments with regards to their substantial biosorption ability to deactivate toxic heavy metals. Actual carbon biofixation can be employed in the direction of environmental sustainability and economic facility. Besides, algae are sustainable feedstock to produce a wide range of biofuels by applying thermochemical or biological conversion methods.

Life cycle costs of co-digestion plant of cattle farm manure and locally available freshwater macrophyte C. demersum, marine brown algae F. vesiculosus, and marine green algae U. intestinalis; ratio 5:1) are analysed based on Latvian climatic and economic conditions. Biomass collection from nature and pre-treatment of biomass, biogas production, biogas treatment and utilization in combined heat and power plant are included in the boundaries. The weak points of scenarios are large capital investments, electricity sale price (and the application of feed-in tariff). As naturally grown algae and macrophytes are used, they are also sensitive to weather conditions each year as available amounts of biomass might change and decrease. Net Present Value is positive only for C. demersum with Internal Rate of Return of –14 % and Discounted Payback Period of 11 years.
