Sustainability issues in a tropical mega trail

Abstract: Sustainability is a target that involves many socio-ecological questions, depends on opportunities and combines different initiatives. This can be especially difficult in regions with high biodiversity scores, mega cities, high level of human populations and an intense and long-standing land use. Here, we show how a mega trail, named Atlantic Forest Trail, within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest can join the protection of biodiversity and sustainable tourism through a 4270 km corridor connecting protected areas a… Show more

“…A study highlights the importance of this region for an endangered species of primate, the southern muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides) (Honorato, 2020). A forest corridor has been proposed to connect these PAs and thus increase the conservation value of this region (Grelle et al, 2021). Besides that, this region has a huge potential of restoring the Atlantic Forest as rural landowners need to comply with the law (Grelle et al, 2021).…”

Besides that, this region has a huge potential of restoring the Atlantic Forest as rural landowners need to comply with the law (Grelle et al, 2021). We recognize the difficulties in establishing protected areas and restoring native vegetation, but protecting this specific area can highly increase the effectiveness of palm species conservation as well as benefit many other species.…”

“…Those trails with a predominantly North-South orientation, as is the case of the Triple Crown, may be especially relevant in a climate change scenario. They may constitute the so-called climate corridors (Nuñez et al 2013), allowing species range shifts along the latitudinal gradient in response to climate change (Hunter et al 1988;Carroll et al 2018;Grelle et al 2021).…”
