Sustainability development analysis of semi‐intensive shrimp farms in Sonora, México

Abstract: During the year 2000, 12 modified and five new sustainable development indicators (SDIs) were applied and a sustainable index (SI) was developed for 21 out of the 33 semi-intensive shrimp farms in Sonora, Mexico, to measure their sustainable development. Farms 5, 7 and 19 showed the highest values in social indicators, farms 5, 7 and 19 in the economic indicators and farms 2, 3 and 4 in natural indicators. In contrast farms 9, 16 and 17 obtained the lowest values in social indicators, farms 3 and 11 in the eco… Show more

“…However, in nearly all cases the shrimp farms have been located adjacent to, rather than within, the mangrove stands (Figure 6), and there has been little net loss of mangrove stands so far (Table 8; also see P! a aez-Osuna (2001) and Gonzalez et al (2003)). This is due to federal legal restrictions on the clearing of mangrove forests, and also because pond construction and management are easier on the flats than in the mangrove marshes themselves.…”

“…They try to measure responsible farming practices instead of focus on the central rationale of sustainability that is the capacity of a system persists in time. Some articles using indicators of sustainability to assess aquaculture systems have been published (Dalsgaard et al, 1995;Lightfoot et al, 1996;Dalsgaard and Oficial, 1997;Caffey et al, 2001;González et al, 2003;Stevenson et al, 2005;Tipraqsa et al, 2007;Bergquist, 2007;O'Ryan and Pereira, 2015;Chowdhury et al, 2015;Ting et al 2015, Moura et al, 2016. However, most of the indicators proposed are qualitative, restricted to environmental dimension, specific regions, species or systems, must be obtained from secondary data (which often are not available), or were developed to help the consumer decisions.…”
