Sustainability assessment of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is assessed in transboundary context, using Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM) technique. RIAM indicates that in both Physical and Chemical category and Biological and Ecological category, there are major negative impacts for both upstream and downstream countries. On the other hand, the RIAM indicates that in Sociological and Cultural category and Economic and Operational category will have a positive impact in upstream countries and negative impacts in downstream countries. The result is not intended to substitute for a full assessment of impacts, only to help shed light on some of the issues that deserve greater attention. The study concludes RIAM is a useful tool for decision makers as it is able to display the results of different development scenarios and produce transparent environmental solutions, even with very complex options. RIAM is an effective technique in environmental impact assessment, in particular with very complicated transboundary context as verified in this study. It is hoped that the realistic ability of RIAM in dealing with transboundary context is paved the way to full approval of both upstream and downstream countries in achieving sustainable development for shared water resources. Assessment Schemes for Sustainability Design through BIM: Lessons Learnt

Abstract. There is increasing demand on sustainability-led design to reduce negative impacts brought by construction development. The capability of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to achieve sustainability is widely acknowledged. Various sustainability analysis and calculation can be performed at early stages to help the designers in decision making. However, the level of implementation is still not popular in the construction industry. Many of the industry players are still rely on traditional 2D method for designing and analysis. Hence, this study aims to demonstrate a proof concept of using BIM for sustainability design. The first phase of this study conducted a critical review of existing assessment schemes: BREEAM, LEED, SBTool, CASBEE, BEAM Plus, Green Star, Green Mark and GBI, to develop a set of main criteria to be considered for sustainability design. The findings revealed that fourteen criteria are considered, which are management, sustainable site, transport, indoor environmental quality, energy, waste, water, material, pollution, innovation, economics, social, culture and quality of services. It was found that most of the existing schemes emphasized on environmental aspect as compared to economics, social and culture except SBTool. The next phase of this study will conduct a case study to demonstrate sustainability design through BIM by using the criteria developed from the first phase.

Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) has an important impact on health and wellbeing of building users. In order to maintain an acceptable IEQ, policies, strategies and guidelines on achieving the required IEQ have been developed. Control and evaluation of indoor air factors is needed for ensuring the sufficient air quality. Impact of emmisions from building materials, furnishings and HVAC systems to indoor air quality should be included in the assessment of indoor environmental quality. In many systems for sustainability assessment of buildings is put a great emphasis on indoor environmental quality. This paper provides an overview of sustainability assessment systems for rating of indoor environmental quality. The criteria included in LEED, BREEAM and other well known systems for assessment of indoor environmental quality are presented. Building environmental assessment system (BEAS) developed for application in Slovakia is also introduced. Worldwide used rating systems were based on the development of BEAS. This is multi-criteria system contained six main fields such as site selection and project planning; building construction; indoor environment; energy performance; water and waste management. System consist from 53 indicators of assessment.
