Sustainability assessment model for heritage buildings

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this research is to focus on the evaluation of heritage buildings' sustainability. BIM modeling was necessary for the design of the sustainability assessment model for Heritage Buildings (SAHB). Using ArchiCAD®, energy simulations were performed for two case studies (Murabba Palace, Saudi Arabia, and Grey Nuns Building, Canada), and the developed model was validated through sensitivity analysis.Design/methodology/approachHeritage buildings (HBs) are unique and must be preserved for future… Show more

“…Both methods were selected because of their wide acceptance and use in the field of heritage science [41][42][43][44], including applications in which they are coupled with expert elicitation [45,46]. The AHP method is particularly suitable to capture linguistic judgments as those requested from the experts and transform them into numbers [47], whilst TOPSIS has been argued to outperform other ranking methods due to its capacity for representing the rationale of human choice, accounting for best and worst alternatives simultaneously and ease of computation [48].…”

“…It was built around 150 years ago. Murabba Palace is one of the most famous historic buildings in the Kingdom, with an area of 988,464 m 2 [30,31]. Figure 2 depicts plans such that according to these AutoCAD ® plans, the BIM model was generated based on the DesignBuilder ® platform, as shown in Figure 3.…”

“…To evaluate the environmental condition of a building space in term of its IEQ, factors and their various measurements should first be identified. Each factor is comprises some sub-criteria as shown in Figure 3, where the quality of this factor depends on the condition of its sub-criteria when compared to the corresponding codes and standards (Eweda, 2012;Al-Sakkaf et al, 2019). IAQ: Air quality is determined first by identifying air pollutants in a given space.…”
