Sustainability analysis of observed climate change adaptation strategies in maize farming in Benin, West Africa

Abstract: The aim of this article was to analyse possible relationships between observed climate change adaptations as developed by farmers and the sustainability level of their production systems. The sustainability levels were measured through a participatory indicators-based approach. A tri-variate Tobit regression model including the observed climate change adaptations as explanatory variables was specified to analyse the main drivers of the measured sustainability levels. Data collection was conducted by survey met… Show more

“…As a result, farmers compelled to avail required credit from informal sources at a higher interest rate that affected vegetable farms to be profit inefficient. Indeed, access of farmers to formal credit could improve the farm efficiency (Parikh et al, 1995;Yegbemey et al, 2017) and contribute for fostering the economic sustainability. Therefore, policies should encourage formal financial institutions, micro-credit programs, and cooperative credit programs to provide financial resources to farmers with subsidized rate in vegetable farming.…”

“…Although, women have relatively less access to resources and opportunities in extension services, they are more sincere in resource allocation and economic planning that led them more efficient in vegetable farming (Bozoglu and Ceyhan, 2007;Shrestha et al, 2016a;Joshi and Kalauni, 2018). Farmers' contact with extension agencies, affiliation of farmers with organization, and access to credit significantly contribute to the sustainability dimension in agriculture (Yegbemey et al, 2017). Therefore, policymakers should give more attention to encourage women in vegetable farming with incentive packages integrating extension services, training programs and credit facilities.…”

“…In addition, climate change threatens crop yields, especially in West Africa because of strong agricultural dependencies and limited adaptations (IPCC, 2007;Yegbemey, Yegbemey, & Yabi, 2017). According to Yegbemey et al (2017), crop diversification and land use change strategies are among the most sustainable options for climate change adaptation. Thus, there is the need for a cropping strategy that increases productivity, income, and resource utilization per unit area of available arable lands to improve land use.…”
