Sustainability along the Value Chain: Collaborative Approaches and their Impact on Firm Performance

The recent (2016) implementation in the Italian judicial system of the European Directive (2014/95/EU) about the disclosure of non-financial and diversity information by large companies and groups is crucial for understanding the need to manage in a fair approach the transition to a global and sustainable economy oriented to social and environmental principles. The Directive calls for a more concrete proof of social, environmental and ethical concerns that can be guaranteed by integrated tools. Integrated reporting generates impacts at governance level and new set of transparent and intelligible information shared with stakeholders favor their engagement and allow understanding of the social role that the company was always asked to play but not always has properly communicated. Implementing integrated reporting, a company might enhance its performances, increase market rating, build more effective bank-firm relationships, and generate growing value, both in perception and financial.

Sustainable tourism is a multi-stakeholder issue, whose aim is to stimulate the balanced exploitation of natural resources at the local level and to limit the social and environmental impacts. The businesses operating in the tourism sector mainly consist of SMEs. Their impact, although less significant if considered individually, are significant at the local level, particularly considering the cumulative effects produced by tourism businesses in a specific area and the role such businesses can play in influencing the behavior of tourists/guests. Focusing on the positive impacts and limiting the negative effects at social and environmental levels, represent the key to sustainable tourism for businesses.

Collective Action for Territorial Identity in Tourism: The Case Study of Two UNESCO Sites

An innovative approach not developed in management and valorisation of tourist destinations yet considers tourism heritage and related territorial identity as a common and brings attention to the implication of the logics of self-organised and self-governed collective action of the common theory applied to territorial governance. The analysis of two case studies of two UNESCO sites is developed: the Cilento, Vallo of Diano and Alburni National Park and the city of Venice. The first represents a case of territorial domain identity characterised by collaborative governance and the second is characterised by uncooperative governance. The theory of commons and self-governed collective action applied to the two cases contributes to the definition of new research pathways and suggests innovative management strategies.
