Suspended sediment fluxes in the tidal Ouse, UK

Abstract: Abstract:A strong turbidity maximum (TM) of suspended particulate matter (SPM) was observed in the upper Humber and lower Ouse during both spring and neap tides of May 1994. Near-bed concentrations within the TM sometimes exceeded¯uid mud levels following slack water periods. SPM within the TM comprised very ®ne-grained material. Its low organic content demonstrated that the SPM was essentially mineral, clastic sediment. Generally, tidal advection of SPM was the dominant¯ux mechanism and the pronounced¯ood±ebb… Show more

“…There was a pronounced increase in particle size in the tidal river, up-estuary of the ETM. Under conditions of high freshwater flows, the inflow can be much more turbid (more than 100 mg l −1 , as opposed to 6 mg l −1 , Uncles and Stephens 1999), and SPM derived from the ensuing catchment erosion typically has a much greater percentage of clay-sized particles (Walling et al 2000).…”

“…Investigation of land-sea interactions were initially dominated by fields of biogeochemistry (69 articles published) and ecology (50 articles published), accounting for 71.6% of the total of articles. Particularly, when articles of land-sea interactions began to be published in 1997, most of them were in the United Kingdom in disciplines of biogeochemistry with focus on nutrients and sediment fluxes (e.g., [24,[29][30][31]). On the other hand, management research represents 12% of studies with 20 articles, which began in 2010 (Figure 3; e.g., [32,33]).…”

“…Estuaries are inherently dynamic systems that are characterized by nonlinearities in flow and material transport, as well as important departures from steady state (e.g. Regnier et al 1997;Uncles and Stephens 1999;Dyer 2001;Arndt et al 2009). The transient nature of the estuarine environment can be illustrated by examining the relationship between salinity and river discharge (Fig.…”
