Susceptibility testing of clinical isolates of Methylobacterium species

Abstract: The genus Methylobacterium was first proposed in 1976 (7) to accommodate gram-negative bacteria that have the ability to utilize methane and other more complex organic compounds as carbon and energy sources. Subsequently, the description of the genus Methylobacterium has been emended to include non-methane-utilizing bacteria (4); these authors also proposed that all pink-pigmented, facultatively methylotrophic bacteria be transferred to the genus Methylobactenium. This latter group of organisms includes previo… Show more

“…In clinical health issues like treatments of infections, aminoglycosides and quinolones were reported to be effective (3,9), while public health issues have been countered with surfactants and sanitizers, like quaternary ammonium compounds (10). However, we found that Methylobacterium strains isolated from bathrooms were tolerant to various stresses, including surfactants like benzalkonium chloride (BAC) (8,11).…”

“…In agreement with a previous report, aminoglycosides were extremely active against Methylobacterium species in vitro, whereas â-lactam drugs showed variable inhibitory effects (Brown et al, 1992). Half of our isolates were susceptible to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.…”

“…Two large Methylobacterium studies assessing in vitro antibiotic susceptibility have demonstrated broad resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics (2,6). To date, isolates tested have been imipenem susceptible (1,7,9).…”
