Susceptibility of some oral microorganisms to chlorhexidine and paramonochlorophenol

Abstract: Since the use of antimicrobial agents is required in endodontic therapies, this study aimed at determining the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of chlorhexidine digluconate and paramonochlorophenol (PMC) against microorganisms commonly found in endodontic infections. Both agents were tested by agar dilution tests against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Porphyromonas endodontalis, P… Show more

“…Chlorhexidine gluconate has been used in endodontics as an irrigation solution (15)(16)(17)(18)20) and as an intracanal medication (15,17,19). It is active against a wide range of microorganisms, such as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (1,(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21). In addition to its low cytotoxicity and high antimicrobial activity, CHX has other properties that make its use suitable in endodontic treatments, such as the ability to interact with oral tissues (1,15,17,(20)(21) and to continue to be released for a long period of time (17,(20)(21).…”

CHX gel is an effective intracanal medication due to its broad antimicrobial spectrum (1,(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21), which is in agreement with the present findings.…”
